Alight IRA

Alight IRA is a retirement savings strategy offered by Alight for tax-efficient growth and a broader investment selection, including potential access to withdrawals for eligible rollover funds, enhancing flexibility alongside your existing employer-sponsored plan.

Project Overview

Alight is currently engaged in the development of an innovative new product offering in partnership with Goldman Sachs and Apex - Fintron, called Alight IRA. The primary objective of this initiative is to effectively persuade users who have been terminated or have departed from their positions to roll over their existing funds from their 401k plans into an Alight IRA. For the initial launch, there is one predominant user type that will be targeted: individuals who are either terminated or departed employees holding a 401k balance and who are eligible to perform a rollover.

The management options available to these users include two distinct pathways: "Manage Account For Me," which is managed by Goldman Sachs, and "Do It Yourself," which is overseen by Apex - Fintron. Depending on the user's choice, they will be redirected to a partner site that aligns with their selected management option.

My Role

I led the design direction and strategy for the new IRA landing page and integration points throughout Alight Worklife. I spearheaded the development of desktop and mobile-responsive prototypes in collaboration with partners Goldman Sachs and Fintron

Discovery Process

Research Methods

Personas

I guided my designer to analyze the various personas for Alight Worklife, in doing so we gained a more comprehensive understanding of the general pain points and key insights that we could address in our design efforts. Some of these identified issues included users expressing desire for the benefits information to be presented clearly and concisely. Additionally, users emphasized the need for the use of common understandable language, as well as optimizing the time spent on the site for a more efficient experience. User feedback indicated that when they visit the site, it is typically for a quick task, and do not take the time to explore other areas.

Problem Statement Exercise

To understand our users and various pain points, I created and led an exercise with our core team of Alight designers, to identify the problem statement. This exercise was conducted for two primary reasons, with the first being to effectively consolidate the various pain points from business along with those that we identified through our persona review. The second reason was to gain a deeper understanding of the problem at hand, which would enable us to develop informed hypotheses that provide us with a clear point of view for our design work.

User flow

I guided my designers to create a user flow that helped us understand the Alight design team's role in this project. It showed how our work fit together with other design projects from our partners, Goldman Sachs and Fintron. This analysis highlighted important connections and overlaps between our efforts and theirs.

Content Audit

I collaborated with my Product Management team and designers to identify key pages for users to interact with the Alight IRA offer. We performed a content audit and shared our results. The pages we focused on were the Alight Worklife homepage, the Savings and Retirement page, and the Withdrawals and Rollover flow page.

Competitive Analysis

I guided my designers to thoroughly compare several major IRA platforms currently available on the market, including popular options such as SoFi, Chase, and Webull, with our own platform. This comparison aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the overall IRA landscape.

Design Iterations

Our initial work began with insights from our users, who wanted clear and simple language for easy understanding and digestable at a glance information. As we started designing, we faced limitations in our design system, which mainly focused on transactional pages in Alight Worklife. After our first research study with users, we realized that to meet our goals, we needed to shift our approach and break some of our design system rules for a more marketing-oriented style. This thinking is what lead us to our final solution.

🔑 Outcome & Key Learnings

This project yielded significant positive outcomes:

  • Generated a New Revenue Stream: The design work directly contributed to the development of a new revenue source for the company, with the potential to generate millions of dollars annually.

  • Enhanced Cross-functional Collaboration: By facilitating seamless communication and breaking down silos between partner contractors (Goldman Sachs & Fintron), product managers, and the engineering team, this project fostered a more collaborative and efficient workflow.

Key Learnings

  1. Navigating Uncertainty: This project reinforced the importance of effectively guiding the design process and generating innovative ideas even when faced with limited initial information.

  2. Challenging Conventions: Don't fear deviating from established norms when a strong rationale exists. Sometimes, the most innovative solutions emerge from thinking outside the box

  3. Striving for Excellence: Always prioritize creating a five-star user experience. Aiming high fosters creativity and drives exceptional outcomes that resonate with users.

  4. Communication is Key: Effective communication is paramount for successful collaboration across all teams involved in the product development process.
